About Us
ZSL (Zoological Society of London) is a science-led conservation charity dedicated to helping wildlife and people thrive together. Founded in 1826, the organisation has spent two centuries building connections between people and the natural world while developing practical responses to the threats facing animals and their habitats.
Its work spans conservation science, field programmes and two leading conservation zoos: London Zoo and Whipsnade Zoo. Through its world-renowned Institute of Zoology, ZSL conducts research that improves understanding of wildlife health, biodiversity loss and environmental change. This evidence informs conservation action and helps shape decisions made by governments, communities and other organisations.
Across the UK and around the world, ZSL works with scientists, conservationists and local communities to protect threatened species, restore damaged habitats and find ways for people and wildlife to live alongside one another. Its teams identify species at risk of extinction, investigate the pressures affecting them and develop sustainable solutions designed to support their recovery. ZSL is involved in more than 50 conservation projects globally, many focused on highly threatened species.
Education and public engagement also form an important part of its mission. Through its zoos, research, training and campaigns, the charity encourages people of all ages to understand, value and act for nature. It shares expertise with conservation professionals and helps build the skills, tools and networks needed to protect wildlife over the long term.
ZSL believes nature can recover when action is guided by science and supported by people. By combining research, hands-on conservation, animal care and public advocacy, the organisation works to create lasting change for wildlife, communities and the planet. It remains committed to ensuring wildlife has a secure and resilient future.
